Portrait Photographer


Job Description:  Take pictures of individuals or groups at a studio or on location


Skills Needed:  You need to be able to multi-task in order to schedule appointments and take pictures. Also, you need to be good with technology in order to use cameras and edit the pictures. You need to have very good eye sight in order to set up a picture correctly and fix minor details. You need to be patient to deal with difficult customers or children.

Educational Requirements: In order to get a really good job at entry level, it would help to have a degree in photography; however, it is not necessary. If you have basic knowledge, getting a job wont be too hard.

Growth:  Moving up in the photography business is easily done. Depending on the company you work for determines your ability to move up. Working for a big company helps you progress to bigger events or even your own company.

Public/Private Settings:  Some photographers work inside a studio, and other types of portrait photographers own their own business and shoot outside or wherever they want.

Money:  $26,000 at entry level and $63,000 tops ( all depends on if you are working for someone or have your own business and how well known you are)

High School/College:  Photography classes, internships....etc.



Art Director:  design concepts and presentations, help designers, 4 year bachelor degree, $25-$120,000


Creative Director:  manager, meets with clients and design pitches, critiquing, office administrative, experience, same education as graphic designer, $100,000

Documentary Photography:  take pictures of historical events, black and white pictures, bachelors degree, $28,000-$75,000

Advertising Photography:  commercial photographers, billboards, magazines, products etc. $47,000-$200,000

Editorial Photography:  take pictures for newspapers and magazines, $25,000-$55,000, GED
